A remix manipulates a certain cultural artifact by combining various adaptations through blending techniques (Knoble, 2008, pg.22). Old songs are produced and remixed to be clearer, pictures can be altered, and films are manipulated to display different meanings. Today, there are ‘smart tools’ that have knowledge built into them that can enable people to collaborate with tools to perform complex tasks (Knoble, 2008, pg.30). Without realization, various forms of art are remixed through the cultural changes and technological advances such as photoshop and other easily accessible appliances on desktops. Thus, making remixes in the 21st century to provide new concepts of genre presented in a film as many manipulations can take place to alter art into various forms of meanings. By comparing two videos of remixes from the movie The Avengers and the TV show The Office, it is apparent that manipulating audio and scenes can change the portrayed genre of a film.

The videos selected are trailer remakes that use audio from each other to manipulate the work. Riddell foresaw this potential for new musical development as anticipated new music based on reworking MP3 recordings pulled from the internet (Shiga, 2007, pg. 94). Both trailers are ripped from previous videos and music found from the internet and transformed the original with a remixed mash-up. For Example, The Office trailer audio is replaced with The Avengers soundtrack to emphasize a more serious tone rather than a comedic one and The Avengers trailer has a more comedic twist from soundtracks and editing. Through remixing, the scenes are perfectly synced with the new audio and create a different perspective for the viewers towards the characters. Specifically, changing the initial genre of the film can be influenced by the remixing of original arts and to craft a new genre. The Office is represented as a comedic show yet, with visual and sound editing of the trailer turns into an action-packed TV series consisting of the same characters. Similarly, The Avengers adopt a comedic genre towards the serious film as genres displays how specific choices that writers make can result in specific actions on the part of readers (Dirk, 2010, pg. 254). As a result, the influence of 3rd parties, editing and remixing can determine a different genre as the 2 videos of The Office and The Avengers are manipulated genre.

Art is a form of work that is proposed and created a new, whereas Craft is constructed using the initial art form. All remixes are part of a craft from creative individuals as they effectively transform the initial meanings of the art into a whole new meaning. For example, the trailers of The Office and The Avengers display these videos as being original, and not an adaptation of copyright from the actual films. Craft is the use of the expansion of creativity from an initial art form and is a branch of individual inspiration from the films. In the comparison of both trailers, both are unique in effectively changing the genre and changing stage to a satirical image. Yet, the trailer of The Avengers remixed with The Office intro was more effective in presenting a satirical form of the genre. The trailer consisted of sound mixing to be synced with the voices of characters and created cut scenes within the trailer.

Remixing is a craft that changes an initial art form and creates a vast majority of entertainment industries. Within the discussed videos, the type of remix is ‘selective’ by adding or subtracting certain material from the original song for the film to recreate a new version (Remix, 2007, pg. 2). Without remixing, many songs and films that we know of are adapted from an origin, in this case, the mash-up craft of the two trailers adopted the video yet, replaced the music to remix. As a result, the importance of mash-ups and remixes are crucial to the larger expansion of music.
